Superstition Ain’t the Way

When we pray we say,

“Our Father . . . ”

but do we believe it?

“who art in heaven . . . ”

but do we even know
what and where heaven is?

“Hallowed be thy name . . . ”

but do we even know
what that means?

“Thy kingdom come . . . ”

but do we even comprehend
what we are asking?

If the answer to these questions is
No . . .

We pray in vain,
Believing in things
We don’t understand
And therefore suffer 'cause
“Superstition ain’t the way”

When we recite by rote
what we are told
without knowing,
without believing,
what we are saying,
our words themselves
become the snare
keeping us in bondage.

Blind we are
to presume we know
when we really don't have a clue.
